Being the miraculous invention, Television is a double-edged sword with uncountable pros and countless cons. touching the negative ones and looking up for unfavorable evidence with unflinching arguments. Precedence of ratings leading to a hefty commercialism and over-shadowing the patriotism. To be sure, sensationalism, blackmailing and emotionalism exempt from logic have made mockery and laughing stock of above invention. Adding more salt to the wounds, imitation, excitation and desensitization are the directly laid impacts on the nascent minds with in-death scoops. Heavy exodus of channels has tried its level best to draw the best possible advertisements based on TRP. Despite such existential mess, the way out is somewhat troublesome but possible if shown little bit sincerity and concentration.
Technology creates more problems than it can solve. Same the case is with Television. It has shrunk the world to a little room wherein one can even watched US electoral proceedings live. Branded as sharp double-edged sword cutting both the sides; initially, lackluster, now there exists an unending list of its cons leaving the dark blot on the minds of every age. The cons began to hike when it fell prey to ratings setting aside the actual purpose: whipping up of nationalism patriotism. Once the unbelievable scientific invention, now has failed to show up the people’s trust retention rate. Sadly shrouding the realities and enlightening the fake news containing juicy disinformation has added much to its discredibility. But nothing is impossible except turning back milk into breast; devise an accountability system independent of government to cure the sticking ailments.
Bound to write about the effects so the ducking and weaving won’t yield any satisfactory outcome; commercial leanings have driven television to an ignominious end. It has gone to even an extreme length of giving back to patriotism at the expense of commercialism and ratings. It is worth-feeling shy when the ratings go down while giving coverage to unsung areas and people of Pakistan, like FATA, Baluchistan, Tharis, Shedis and many others respectively. TV has, now a days, remained limited to an elite class. They get due coverage and feel proud to watch themselves. Truly speaking, by doing so it won’t earn any accolades rather distract the masses from it. Consequently, neutrality, balance and equality be made its bases and let it churn out something commendable. One-sided and selective agenda has already dented the credibility of Baird’s invention.
Nothing is better than nonsense. Similarly, using TV for sensationalism and black-mailing to extract money from the pockets of common folks is also an ostensible nonsense. Infinity of pseudo Journalists have nothing to do but to back-mail the feudal lords, politicians and bureaucrats to feed themselves. They pull a rabbit out of a hat and publicize it. Even bursting of tier or a cylinder is portrayed as heavy frequency bomb blast which sensationalizes the masses aimlessly. When the actuality of an event reveals, they weave to escape from back door leaving the TV alone to bear the harsh backlash. Thus, the negative impact is created in the minds of people for TV and they ultimately end up rejecting even some times real and actual news. It is rightly said, “Myth once created takes triple time to be eliminated”. TV has, too, met out the very fate and now in dire need of an overhaul to shift the broadcasting strategy.
Last but not the least: hiking negative impacts on the younger minds in the form of imitation, excitation and desensitization. Tender-aged children strive to initiate what they see on TV which lead them to excitation and finally get desensitization. When they see violence, they try to practice it in the world around which brings damage to their physical as well as mental health. Many teenagers get excited while seeing romantic scenes on TV and act alike in their surrounding inciting the countless punches, fists and slaps in public. Having watched frequently, they get desensitized and repose confidence in themselves to be able to practice what has been seen on TV. But no worries, because this all can be cured provided awareness and sincerity is shown by parents and authorities through syllabus.
Given the all above complexities, authorities and regulating bodies will have to diversify their options keeping in view the common folks’ genuine interests. Getting away with sensitization, emotionalism and black-mailing is indispensable in remedying the ailments of decades. Secondly creating awareness among the children through lectures, seminars and curriculum so that they may not practice what they see. Moreover, the authorities must take the notice of violence shown on TV and prevent it to the best possible level. Finally an independent accountability body needs to be devised to set the standards, limits and boundaries for the TV channels including both state-owned as well as privately owned to follow the prescribed rules. #SajadAhmedParyo
